China has implemented a new national security law in Hong Kong. The law provides for life imprisonment as the maximum punishment for a crime.
The Parliamentary Committee of the National People’s Congress of the Chinese Parliament passed a new national security law for Hong Kong, ignoring harsh criticism and opposition. The law was finally passed unanimously on Tuesday without any special cuts. Members of parliament voted in favor of the bill last month.
After the passage, Chinese President Xi Jinping signed the law yesterday. Through this the law comes into force.
According to the law, if a serious national security crime is committed, the maximum punishment for the offender may be life imprisonment.
Under the new law, any act of collusion with foreign forces to endanger separatism, the fall of the central government, terrorism and national security will be considered a punishable offense. The maximum penalty for such a crime is life imprisonment.The law gives Hong Kong the legislature the power to take any security measures.
With the law in place, Chinese security forces will be able to open public offices in Hong Kong. Which they could not do before. This office will look after national security issues. They will act according to Chinese law, not Hong Kong.Democrats say the law runs counter to Hong Kong's autonomy and independence. China's move will make Hong Kong uneasy anew.
