The locusts that attacked Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon) in Haryana, adjacent to the capital, on Friday night, swarmed the sky since Saturday morning. The administration fears that crop-destroying locusts could strike Delhi at any time.
A month and a half ago, locust infestation started in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Since then they have gradually come to Haryana through parts of Punjab, the western edge of Uttar Pradesh. Fifteen days ago their strength was greatly reduced. But suddenly a few days ago their strength increased. Their anagona started in the sky of Gurugram from Friday afternoon to evening. On Saturday, it covered the sky like a thick black cloud. The district administration advised everyone to keep the doors and windows closed and chase away the locusts.Gurugram on the outskirts of the capital is known as the 'cyber hub' of northern India. This sophisticated city is surrounded by vast farmland. The first thought of the administration is to save the crops of that land from the hands of locusts. The police and the administration are repeatedly trying to drive away the locusts by blowing sirens and hooters. Many people are seen trying to repel locusts by playing dishes and brass bells. But the outbreak did not stop. Social media is full of locusts.
According to PTI, the Haryana state government has warned the district administration to deal with the situation. Measures have been taken to spread pesticides to save the crop. The fire department has been asked to be ready for that. Rita Sharma, a resident of Gurugram, told PTI. Police and administration ordered the doors and windows to be closed.Dishes, bronze bells keep ringing. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has called an emergency meeting to deal with the locusts.
